Wind is the whole problem

On the plains there is almost always air moving, and a lavalier microphone in wind produces a low roar that cannot be removed later without making a voice sound like a drive-through. We use furred windshields and we put a body between the mic and the wind, but the real answer is structural: the interview happens in a cab, a shop, an office or the lee of a building, and the wide landscape shots happen separately. You still get the film that looks like Weld County. You just don't get the roar under it.

Two more that catch people out. Livestock are loud and unpredictable neighbours for an interview — worth walking a hundred yards. Why these interviews are unusually good

People who work outdoors for a living are, in our experience, the best testimonial subjects there are. They are specific, they are unhurried, they do not talk in slogans, and they will tell you what went wrong before they tell you what went right. You do not have to coach any of it — which is fortunate, because coaching is the one thing that ruins a film like this.

We say that as a warning rather than a boast. Subjects are overwhelmingly willing to be directed: tell someone the answer sounded good and they will produce a bigger version and be pleased to have helped. In 31 delivered films, exactly one subject has asked us to change the edit — which means nobody downstream is checking either. A leading question does not produce a weak answer, it manufactures a false one that everybody signs. So we ask open questions and let the person say the true thing in their own order.
